Clients need to know. So do designers.
I’ve known some clients to think designers are just stalling when they don’t offer an immediate quote, that they’re trying to figure out how much the client can afford. But what good would that do? Designers are by no means guaranteed the business, so it makes more sense to offer a quote as soon as possible.
The topic of cost isn’t a simple one, because no project is the same, and every client differs. I can’t provide my own prospective clients an accurate quote until I know exactly what is needed, and I won’t know those needs until I’ve asked quite a few questions.
This design pricing formula does a little to explain the complexity of cost.
